What is anxiety?

Anxiety is more than stress; it’s a feeling of worry, unease or feeling nervous about something or uncertain about a future outcome. It can also be described as feeling fearful or worrying about the future or something that may happen to you or the people you love.

There are many types of anxiety and a range of symptoms for each. They can develop gradually over time, or be triggered by something, or a major impact on your life. In times of high stress, crisis or adversity, these feelings of anxiety or depression will become heightened and, if not treated, could become out of control.

Anxiety and depression are common symptoms when you are going through a difficult or overwhelming time, or a crisis; however, the sooner it is treated, the better and quicker chance you can start to learn how to manage it and start to recover.

What are the symptoms of anxiety, and when should you see your doctor? 

Some common symptoms:

· Shortness of breath

· Tightness of the chest

· Racing heart

· Sweaty palms

· Persistent worrying thoughts

· Focusing on worry and not being able to distract yourself from that

· Having trouble sleeping

· Feeling irritable, reactive e, restless, shaky

· Feeling a sense of dread, or fearing the worst

· Unable to relax

· Intense fear
